The Fridge

Clearly, I  need to stop working on my website when I'm hungry. ^_^

Actually, The Fridge has been a part of Amanda's Room for many years now, almost as long as the site itself has been in existence. (Since 1997, if memory serves) Despite undergoing many transformations (and suffering through a cornucopia of gaudy food-related clipart), The Fridge has always been and will always be a huge list of links directly out of my Favorites folder.  And, like my favorites folders, it's neatly organized into about a hundred different categories. I'm constantly looking for new websites to check out, comics to read, forums to post at, or nifty programs to download, so if you've got an suggestions: send 'em my way.

Just as a note: These aren't just a bunch of random links I threw together. These are places I actually visit and resources I actually use.

Enjoy!

Blogs:

The View from the Chair
This is my father's blog. It's all about his experiences as a dialysis patient and a human being. Check it out, because he's my dad and his blog is cool. Love ya, dad!

Fun Stuff:

Lost in Translation
For a multi-lingual sea dweller, BabelFish is surprisingly dumb. This site aims to take advantage of that lapse in mental prowess, and brings to you, the masses, the highly entertaining and hilarious Lost in Translation. Enter a simple sentence or phrase, such as "Mandaray likes to eat dates", and watch as your sentence is deformed into a string of babble so incomprehensible only a three year old would understand it. Seriously, though, this thing is really funny, and can occupy a surprisingly large amount of your time, especially when shared with friends.

Star Trek: TNG Meets Microsoft!
This text only skit is hilarious, especially if you're a fan of the Star Trek series or have techie tendencies. Or both. Like me. =D

The English-to-12-Year-Old-AOLer Translator
Anyone who's been on the Internet for more than five minute knows the horror that is the AOLer. Especially horrifying is the sub-species of this dire breed, known only as the twelve year old. These tender aged terrors ravage the innards of the Internet, ripping apart intelligent discussion and horribly maiming good grammar. Thankfully, there is a defense against these dark and frightening creatures: Good spelling. And a translator that pokes fun at every annoying little bag of pee that every decided to tell the world that their day was "OMG, lyk, so col!1!! LOL OMG".
(Disclaimer: I know there are intelligent 12 year olds on the 'net. I used to be one. Trust me, I know how much the stereotype sucks. This isn't meant to offend any of said twelve year olds, simply to poke fun at the ones that give all of us, regardless of age,  a bad name.)

On the X-play boards!
Normally I run screaming from the room in terror when a television show mentions that they have an upcoming musical episode, but in the case of X-play I swallowed my fear, grit my teeth, and prepared for the worst. And you know what? It wasn't actually that bad. Everybody sang on key (mostly) and it was hilarious because it is just SO true. Anyone who's spent even five minutes on the X-play boards knows I'm right. Even if you haven't been to the X-play boards, or watch X-play, I still suggest watching this video clip because it's just so funny. :)

The Ballad of Joss
JOSS! THE MAN THEY CALL JOSS!! ...*ahem!* No, I'm not insane. This is the link to a funny Filk song about Joss Whedon, and his show Firefly. It's hilarious whether you're a serious hardcore Browncoat, casual flan, or just some random shmoe visiting my website. The music will start playing as soon as the site loads, so prepare your volume. You can download a crisp, clean version of the song by spreading the love and sending the Ballad's digital post card to all your friends. Needless to say I have already done this, have every lyric memorized, and have been known to break out into song abruptly using this tune.

Hamumu Software - Dumb Words
It's simple, it's easy, it's kind of dumb, and I can't get enough of it. The basic premise: Guess what word visitors to this site filled in when they were given a random word association quiz. Surprisingly fun and challenging. If you do it right, you get points. If you get it wrong, you get to laugh at how dumb you are. Actually you get to do that either way. *grin*

Zero Punctuation
After years of reading game reviews only when I absolutely had to, (example: I'm about to buy this game--should I or shouldn't I?) here is a man who finally makes game reviews funny, interesting, and short enough so that my brain doesn't go haywire contemplating how much time I'm spending on the internet. Seriously. If you like video games, have a sense of humor, and are a human being in any way, shape or form, go to this site. You won't regret it. If you do, don't tell me about it because I think this guy kicks ass. (btw the reviews are NOT safe for work. unless you have headphones and a boss who doesn't wig out when they see cartoon characters maiming pictures of baby seals.)

Message Boards:

Yeah, I'm a forum junkie. Here are some links so you can be a forum junkie too. =)

Gaia Online
This is probably my favorite website so far. There are so many people here, that in some sub-forums the dialogue goes so fast it's almost like being in a live chat. With lots of people come lots of different interests and diverse discussion. There are a lot of hateful, angry, or stupid people running around, yes. Also there's a very large and healthy population of drooling, witless n00bs who apparently have no greater aspiration then to hop forums annoying intelligent people like me, but Gaia still has a lot to offer. Especially if you're into Anime or roleplaying. Tell them Kurikins sent you! =D

The Dead Robots' Society Forums
The forum for my new podcast! This is where I'm most active these days if you want to drop me a line for some reason. We have a lot of great conversations on this board, everything from Doctor Who to the latest tech gadgets to what's the best approach to take when it comes to outlining. While this forum will primarily only interest fans of the podcast or aspiring writers, we welcome anyone who's interested in intelligent discussion and the occasional bit of silly fun. :)

Random Stuff I Think is Cool:

AltonBrown.com
As anyone in my immediate family will tell you, I am a complete and total Alton Brown fangirl. I quote him constantly, spout random and questionably useful tidbits of wisdom or food history that I get from watching his show, and there is no such thing as missing an episode of Good Eats in a house where I am present. Why am I such a fan of his? Are you kidding!? Don't ask me stupid questions like this! Go visit the site! Seriously, go do it right now! Or I'll sic ninja gibbons to assault your browser until you do!

FireflyWiki.org
Yes, I'm a Firefly fangirl too. I caught a marathon they aired on Sci-Fi and I've never been the same since. Other science fiction shows just seem empty and stupid now. And after seeing Serenity...well, it's likely most science fiction movies will seem empty and stupid now, too. If you're hooked like I am, this is a great site for gathering information on the show, the actors, and everything else Firefly. They've got pretty much everything, and it's all nicely laid out and very easy to navigate. Why am I such a Firefly fan? Didn't we just have this discussion!?!

Food Network
It's a pretty buggy site sometimes, (if you encounter any broken pages, just replace the "foodnetwork.com" portion of the URL with "foodtv.com" instead, fixes it right up) but not only is Food Network the home of everyone's favorite, Emeril, and my personal favorite, Alton Brown, but it's got a huge amount of other recipes, cooking resources, tutorials, guides, menus, merchandise...you get the idea. If you cook, you should take a look at this website. Then go find Food Network on your cable channel listing and watch Good Eats. And no, that isn't a request.

DA! Desktop Anime
I'm not even that big of an Anime nut and I still love this website. Tama-neko makes absolutely gorgeous wallpapers. I'm not talking your run of the mill, "ooh it's pretty" kind of gorgeous here. I'm talking "OH WOW, my desktop now has a soul" gorgeous. She makes amazing stuff. Even if you're not an Anime fan, you should visit this site. No, really. Go now.

Podiobooks.com
This website is the first of it's kind. Original works of fiction, published in podcast format, available free to anyone who wants them. Their selection grows daily, and the amount of talent that's available on this site is staggering. I love this site!

Video Game Resources, Downloads, or Particularly Cool Fansites:

English to Al Bhed Translator, with phonetics
Now you too can confuse your friends by sending them emails written entirely in Al Bhed! It's fun for the whole family. Or your gaggle of mischievous friends, whichever. If you don't know what an Al Bhed is...go play Final Fantasy X. No, seriously. Go play the game now.

Neverwinter Vault
If you are a Neverwinter Nights fan, and you need something for your game--be it a mod, or a patch, or just some new images to spice up your character's profile, this website has what you need. And other stuff you didn't even know you needed until you found it here. This website is HUGE, with HUGE amounts of stuff for literally ALL of your NWN needs. Did I mention it was HUGE?

SquareSound
If you are in need of Final Fantasy music, this is your website. They don't offer it free to download, but you can buy almost any album from any Final Fantasy game (and some others non FF related, such as Kingdom Hearts) that you've ever dreamed of. If I had more money I'd buy everything on this site. It's beautifully laid out and easy to navigate, too. They also feature the latest in Final Fantasy soundtrack news on the front page.

Morrowind Walkthrough & Strategy Guide
OK, I'll be honest. I loathe Morrowind with the passion of a thousand burning suns. I want to burn copies of it in the street and sacrifice small animals into the flames in the hopes that a new, more interesting and less pathetic game will arise from it's ashes. BUT, if you are one of those many people who does like Morrowind--this is a great site. It helped me a lot when I was playing, and it flies in the face of the lily-livered excuse of "Oh, Morrowind is too huge to make a walkthrough for! Oh, pity us for we are cowards!" It also has a lot of cool strategy suggestions and a lot of other info. It doesn't make the game any less crappy, though. Sorry.

Sorcerer's Place
I would be a sad excuse for a Realmsian indeed if I didn't link to this site. Sorcerer's is, hands down, THE resource for everything D&D and Realmsian, especially if you're playing the games from either series. They have everything from Planescape: Torment to Throne of Bhaal. Their lists are huge, well kept, well inspected, well organized...it's just a beautiful site. Their mods are incredible. I love them. They make the games ten times better. Go. If you visit no where else on the web, go to this site.

Chrono Cross: Walkthrough
I bought a copy of Chrono Cross off eBay over six months ago, and I still haven't managed to get through it. Granted, I haven't spent every moment of my time playing it, but it's still a tough game. There's a lot of stuff you can miss and a lot of confusing puzzles. (Well, at least they confused me.) This walkthrough helps with some of that, mixing raw information with a healthy sense of humor. Informative, short, to the point, and amusing, this is a great walkthrough for anyone playing (or replaying) Chrono Cross.

Startopia Post
Startopia for the PC is simultaneously one of the most amazing and most under advertised games ever created. Anyone who's played it knows how wonderful it is, and yes, it's one of my favorite video games of all time. Unfortunately, thanks to Eidos, we're never going to see another one. Still, hope springs eternal, and the folks at Startopia Post do their best to keep the loyal fan following freshly stocked with news, mods, downloads, even some fanfiction. The site isn't updated very often, due in part to the fact that the game is so old and it's fan following so small, but it's still a good place every Startopia fan should visit.

Traveler's Notebook - CandleKeep.com
This library of random tidbits of Realmsian information is huge. I'm not talking just normal huge, I'm talking tell-you-stuff-you-didn't-even-know-you-couldn't-know huge. Everything you've ever wanted to know about the Forgotten Realms universe, from holidays to Dalereckoning to the holy Prophecies of Alaundo, is here. It's not a particularly flashy site, but it's got a staggering amount of content, and is easy to navigate. This place would be especially useful for anyone writing Realmsian fanfiction.

Stella's
This is, in my opinion, the only site for Tomb Raider related news, walkthroughs, cheats, and downloadable save games for when you just can't quite get past that one nasty boss battle or particularly precarious ledge. I've been visiting Stella's for years, ever since I got my first Tomb Raider game, and I will visit her until the day the internet or (heaven forbid) the site dies. If you play Tomb Raider, you must visit this site. It's amazing, and without it I probably wouldn't have had nearly as much fun with my TR games. Every question you have is answered in Stella's excellent and descriptive walkthroughs, and of course if you ever happen to have a question that isn't answered on the site, you can email Stella directly. She loves hearing from her fans and visitors. There are also save games, forums, and more. If you're a TR fan like me, do yourself a favor - go there now!

Webcomics:

Alpha Shade
OK. I'll be honest. I have absolutely no effing idea what the hell is going on in this comic. But it's gorgeous. And it has cats that are way smarter then they should be. Read it, it's cool.

Catharsis
What this comic lacks visually, it makes up for in sheer hilarity. Catharsis is generally updated daily. There really isn't much of a plot, but, gosh. Rrumbly. Haha! Plots are so overrated. CATS IN HATS! XD

DMFA
Short for "Dan & Mab's Furry Adventures", if you can survive the appearance of the first few comics in the archives, you will be introduced to a wonderfully funny and (despite what Amber says) beautiful comic. There really isn't a plot, and the storyline changes periodically, but there is a main cast of characters and the comic generally follows their adventures as they happen. Everything from amazons in bikinis to giant robotic griffins to Cubi Academies, DMFA has a wide variety of hilarious material. I'm personally fond of "Questions from the Readers!", when Amber is too lazy to draw a full comic and instead answers questions from the readers in comic form with her sidekick, Fluffy. They're really funny.

Domnic Deegan: Oracle for Hire
This comic started out following the simple and often frustrating life of seer Domnic Deegan, and has grown rapidly since then. Now it involves verything from crooked knights to necromancers to infernomancers and loads and loads of other stuff that I can't even begin to go into because it would make everyone's brains shut down.  DEATH FROM ABOVE! XD

Questionable Content
This is another one of those comics where, if you can get through the initial shock of the less than sophisticated art in the beginning of the archives, you will be treated to a hilariously funny comic. QC mixes real life situations with a goodly dose of semi-dark teen/young adult humor. It's the kind of stuff you laugh and joke about with your friends when your parents are out of the house. A lot of the humor is sexually oriented and, of course, like anything having to do with teenagers or young adults, there's a goodly amount of swearing. But it's not a particularly vulgar comic, and a lot of it is pure comic gold, so I would easily suggest it to anyone of any age. Updated Monday through Friday.

The Seraph Inn - Invernloch
The plot is basically explained on page I've linked, so I won't bother summarizing it here. What I will tell you is that this comic is really, really beautiful. Probably one of the best I've ever seen, graphically speaking. The story is pretty good, too, so go check it out.

Writing Resources:

I was going to write a little something about all these links, but there are just too many of them. So I'll only write about the ones I really really like, or when it isn't totally obvious what the site is about from it's name.

Alphabette Zoope Name Lists
I've used Alphabette Zoope for some time now. Her name lists aren't quite as big as some others, but the site is very easy to navigate, doesn't have a bunch of annoying pop-ups, and doesn't automatically assume you're an expecting mother. Plus all the names come with meanings, pronunciation keys, and what country they came from originally. Very cool.

Kid Pub
"Kid Pub" probably won't be very useful to many of you because of the age group it's targeting, but it was one of the first writing websites I ever visited. I stumbled across it when I was but a wee girl and spent a good deal of time submitting short stories to them. Obviously nothing I did was ever published, but I had a lot of fun reading and writing stories for KidPub. The website holds a special place in my heart. =D

TamoraPierce.com
While I may have been run off of the "Sheroes" forum for allegedly lacking a few necessary components of the human soul (such as compassion) I still like Tamora Pierce's website and her books. She may not be my favorite author of all time, but she does have useful information for aspiring writers and is a creative, interesting woman.

The English to American Dictionary
In the hopes that I might finally understand what the hell she was saying, my good friend Helzebel linked me to this site, so that I could study the intricacies of the British language. Even though we both speak English, a lot of what she says still flies straight over my hugely inflated Yankee head anyway, but with the help of this dictionary I'm finally making some progress. This is a must-have link for anyone with friends in the UK. :)
